Treat Yourself to Healthy Food After a Workout

By Donna Stark

I don't know what happens to me when I exercise, but after I finish an intense workout I always feel the need to treat myself with something decadent, some "forbidden" food that I otherwise know I should stay away from. Cravings like those can definitely be brutal, and that is why I need an alternative option that is just as good, but more on the healthy side. You see, as much as those cravings call my name, there is no way I want to sabotage all of the time and effort I put in with that workout. So instead of giving in, I head on home to create my own healthy post-workout treat! Take a look at a few of my favorites.

Avocado Toast

The perfectly picked avocado, a pinch of salt, and maybe a sprinkling or two of some chopped cilantro mashed together and spread on top of some carbs. What could be more delicious? Well, other than squeezing some lime juice on top? Avocado toast is a perfect snack and such a treat after a hard workout but you don't have to stop there when it comes to toppings. Use your imagination!

Protein Shake

Sure, some protein shakes can be downright disgusting and overly chalky, but there is hope! Find a protein powder that you like and pick ingredients that complement the flavor. This may mean that you will need to experiment with different fruits, vegetables, and powders, but it will be well worth it in the end if you find that winning combination!

Banana With Nut Butter

Bananas are one of the healthiest and most convenient snacks you can choose after a workout. In addition to being low in calories, they are also great at replacing nutrients and preventing post-workout inflammation. But to make them even better, cut your banana in half and top with your favorite nut butter! It's the perfect way to get some extra protein.

Salmon and Sweet Potato

Consuming a proper amount of carbs and protein after exercise is essential and you couldn't pick a better pairing than salmon and sweet potato. And even though it sounds like a lot of work, it really doesn't need to be if you prepare everything ahead of time. Cook your potato before you work out and have your salmon ready to throw on the stove when you come back. So easy!

Control Those Cravings!

Those cravings can certainly sound good in the moment but those extra calories just aren't worth it to me. Plus I know that I will have to work extra hard during my next workout. No thank you! If you feel the same way, try some of the options above or come up with your own! It's easier than you think to just say no to all of those temptations and replace them with healthier options.
