Planning a Safe Spring

By Donna Stark

The weather is finally turning in a different direction and those cold, snowy days will soon be long gone. Do you know what that means? It means more children will be outside riding their bikes, running through fields, and playing at parks. And although it may all look like fun and games, it's not always that way, unfortunately. Outdoor activities can increase the risk of injuries so you need to prepare your kids for what may lie ahead. Here are some kid-friendly safety tips to look over.

Helmet Safety

Even though helmet laws can vary between states, if you want to ensure your children's safety you have to insist they wear one. Helmets help prevent devastating and traumatic head injuries. If your children ride bikes, scooters, or skateboards, take them to your local store and invest in some quality helmets. If you are unsure about size or function, just ask for help!

Road Safety

Once they have their helmets and other protective gear picked out (knee and elbow pads), you may want to go over the rules of the road. Teaching your children how to stay safe while riding their toys is vital! They should understand the following basics.

  • What the traffic signs mean
  • Who has the right of way
  • Which direction to ride
  • When it is safe to ride
  • How to keep themselves visible

Water Safety

If it is warm enough for your children to swim, there are some other types of rules you need to go over with them. These rules will help keep your child safe while in and around bodies of water. Take a look.

  • Do not swim without an adult or lifeguard present
  • Wear a lifejacket when tubing, kayaking, or boating
  • Know your capabilities and limitations
  • Never jump into the water without knowing its depth

Sun Safety

Longer days mean more outside play and more outside play means your children are at an increased risk of sunburn and heatstroke. It is vital that you practice sun safety by encouraging them to play in the shade as much as possible, apply and reapply sunscreen throughout the day, and drink plenty of water!

Planning for a Safe Spring

It is so nice to see all the kids outside, enjoying the weather and their friendships, so let's do all that we can to keep it that way. By talking with your children about the different safety rules that come with their outdoor activities, you can look forward to a happy and safe springtime!
