3 Ways to Stop Stressing So Much

By Genevieve Cunningham

Death and taxes. These are two things in life that we know we can’t avoid. But you know what else we can’t avoid? Stress. Stress from work, stress from school, stress from personal responsibilities. The hardest part about stress is not that we have to deal with it, but that excessive stress can actually damage our health. If you need to lower the stress in your life (and subsequently boost health), take a look at these tips to help you get moving in the right direction.

End Procrastination

So many of us cause our own stress. How? We procrastinate … and we do it all the time. Procrastination is nothing more than putting off an important task. The problem is that most of us put the task off again and again until we’re down to the wire. This, for obvious reasons, causes excessive stress in our lives. If you can bite the bullet and do a task as soon as it’s assigned, stress levels are likely to go down significantly.

Breathe

Most people are shocked at what a good deep breath can do for your psyche. When we force ourselves to breathe deep, it forces our minds and bodies to slow down. When it comes to stress, this can stop the constant flowing of thoughts and emotions that are causing the excessive stress. Get a stress blasting routine that involves three to five deep, slow, methodical breaths. Over time, you’ll notice that stress is lowered almost immediately when you engage in this effective habit.

Walk

Have you ever seen people pace when their stress levels are soaring? This is because excessive stress makes the body crave movement. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, give it what it wants. Throw on some walking shoes and go for a walk, preferably outside if possible. This allows the body to focus on something other than the mental strain, and it may allow the stress to flow through you. By the time your walk is over, your stress will be lower and you’ll be feeling better than ever.

Everyone experiences stress in life. This is a given that we really can’t avoid. But if we learn to manage it and lower it when necessary, everyone will be far better off. Use these tips to get you started, and you’ll be moving in the direction of better mental, emotional, and physical health before you know it.
