3 Tips for Dealing With Damaged Skin

By Genevieve Cunningham

The skin is our body’s biggest organ. But for most of us, it’s more about the way that the skin looks. Sure, we know that it protects us and regenerates and does a lot of really cool things in our body. But it’s also the place where we get age spots and wrinkles and sunburns. And those things can be really frustrating … especially in the beauty-centered culture that we live in. Unfortunately, most of us are already dealing with some sort of damage to the skin, generally brought on by the typical wear and tear of life. And while it’s never too late to begin protecting the skin, what can we do to nourish our already damaged external layer? If you would like to heal and protect your skin from here on out, take a look at these tips.

Moisturize

The skin needs moisture. It needs it both internally and externally. To keep the skin hydrated from the inside, make sure that your diet is full of water. The more water you drink, the healthier the skin is likely to be. And to heal from the outside, make sure that you are applying a good moisturizer multiple times a day. What kind? Whatever works for you! Experiment until you find one that feels good, and then make moisturizing a regular part of your life and routine.

Get a Skincare Routine

Many people underestimate the power of a good skincare routine. But routines are what actually work long-term. A skincare routine should include regular washing, moisturizing, sunscreen application, and any other topical products suggested by your doctor or dermatologist. But these work best when they’re done consistently. Protect your skin morning and night -- and don’t forget regular touch-ups in between, too.

See a Professional

Professionals are there for a reason, and that reason is to help you! If you don’t know where to begin, see a professional. Let them assess your skin and give you advice. If your insurance doesn’t cover it, find a dermatologist that will work with you. The skin is important, so don’t hesitate seeing a professional to get you moving in the right direction.

It’s OK to be concerned about your skin. It’s OK to want it to look nice, clear, fresh, and young for as long as possible. But if you’re going to make these things happen, you have to be proactive! Use these tips to heal your damaged skin and to protect it in the future. With a little planning and discipline, you can turn the health of your skin around and feel better than ever in the skin you’re in.
