4 Ways Pumpkins Can Help Your Health

By Brandi Goodman

Pumpkins are the vegetables of the fall. Many families carve them to adorn their driveways and porches. Some take the seeds to turn them into a nutritious treat. Others use the insides to create pies and other fall desserts. Extend your pumpkin plans this season and use the orange plant to help your health.

You'll Get Exercise Picking Your Pumpkin

Don't get your pumpkin from a store. You'll boost your health by going and picking your pumpkin from a patch. You'll get exercise as you spend time scouring the field looking for the perfect pick. It's also a fun time with friends or family if you go with others, so you'll have a chance to boost your mood as well.

You'll Boost Your Nutrition Eating Pumpkin

Many people choose to simply carve their pumpkin and discard all they've pulled out from the inside. Don't! Boost your nutrition by using the gooey mixture in recipes. There's lots of Vitamin C, fiber, and other nutrients found in pumpkin. You can turn your pumpkin into a pizza crust for a unique meal or even make pumpkin fries. Soup is a great choice for cold nights of fall and winter, so a pumpkin apple soup may be in order.

You'll Work Out Your Arms Carving Your Pumpkin

Carving a pumpkin is one of the most common fall traditions. Give it a try and you may soon realize how much the activity works out your arms. All of the carving, scraping, and cutting being done will have you using different muscles within your arms that you may not be used to. Expect to feel a little sore by the end of it and maybe even for a day or two afterward. Try switching which arm you're using so one does not get too overworked in the process.

You'll Get a Healthy Snack With Pumpkin Seeds

Even if you're not a fan of pumpkin-flavored desserts and meals, the seeds still provide a way to gain nutrition. Create a healthy snack using the seeds you pull out during your pumpkin carving. You can enjoy them baked plain or add some seasonings to enhance the flavor. Lots of fiber and vitamins are found inside.

Pumpkins are plentiful in the fall months. Pick some from a patch or grab them from a store if you're in a hurry and you'll have access to a ton of nutrition. Pumpkins aren't just for fun -- they're for health!
