5 Tips for Lowering the Risk of Heart Disease

By Brandi Swieter

Heart disease plagues millions of people, with both men and women suffering. As people age, the risk increases. While age cannot be changed, there are some aspects that people can make changes to in their lives to lower the risk of developing this disease. With a few tips for doing so, more and more people can help improve their overall heart health.

Stop Eating Sodium

Sodium is bad for the heart. Consuming it in excess can lead to high blood pressure, which in turn leads to an increased risk for heart attacks and stroke. Stop eating so much of it and the chances for this get reduced. This means no longer adding salt to food dishes and avoiding prepackaged meals that contain a high amount of sodium.

Add Exercise to Your Day

Exercise improves overall heart health as the muscle gets worked out just as any other muscle within the body when physical activity occurs. Those who remain sedentary will see their heart health decline. Those who choose to add some exercise to their days will have a stronger heart that can handle more.

Get Adequate Rest

A lack of sleep can cause stress on the body overall, which then puts stress on the heart. There is an increased chance of developing high blood pressure and becoming overweight, which are two primary culprits for heart attacks. Good sleep habits will help prevent this.

Find Coping Mechanisms for Stress

High amounts of stress can raise blood pressure and even be a trigger for a heart attack. Finding healthy coping mechanisms is one of the best ways to combat this. Joining a support group, talking with friends and family more often, writing in a journal, and even exercise can all help people cope with their stressors.

Avoid Cigarettes and Alcohol

Drinking and smoking both dramatically impact the heart. By raising blood pressure, the heart is more likely to develop disease. No more than two alcoholic drinks should be consumed per day, while smoking should occur at all.

Heart health is important for anyone to consider, but especially for those with heightened risks already. Older adults are far more at risk, as are women. A family history of the disease can play into things as well. Those with risk factors should especially do their best to follow these five tips for lowering their chances for developing heart disease.
