Summertime Health Concerns to Consider
By Brandi Goodman
Most people can't wait for summer to arrive. The sun is shining often and the weather tends to be warm. It's easy to get outside and enjoy the beauty all around us. Although the weather may be ideal, there are still some summertime health concerns that you should take into consideration before heading outside.
Dehydration
The hot summer months lead to more occurrences of dehydration for many people. You may find yourself participating in lots of activities and spending time outside without thinking of where you'll get a drink from when you're out. You lose water when you sweat, which happens a lot more than usual when it's hot. You need to be drinking plenty of water to replace what you're losing if you don't want to end up dehydrated and in the hospital getting fluids.
UV Rays
The sun's UV rays can be harmful. Not only will your skin get burnt if you spend too long basking in them, but it can also become badly damaged and even poisoned. Sun poisoning and skin cancer is possible from too much time spent in the sun. Make sure you're wearing sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat or visor to protect yourself from the effects of these harmful rays.
Heat Exhaustion
A fast pulse and excessive sweating are just two of the common symptoms caused by heat exhaustion. It's possible for your body to get exhausted and overworked simply being out in the hot temperature. It's working too hard to maintain its coolness and it just can't keep up. If temperatures are extreme, it's best to limit your time outdoors on these days. Heat exhaustion can even lead to stroke if you're not careful. Find some shade and drink plenty of water to prevent this from happening.
Bites and Stings
Insects and animals are out most often in the summertime. You need to be careful around certain ones that may cause serious side effects if they bite or sting you. A bite from a mosquito may only be bothersome to some, but for others it can lead to large welts that itch beyond belief. Mosquitoes may also carry disease, so being bit by one can be incredibly dangerous. It's important to wear bug spray if you're going to be outdoors in an area where these bugs are present. Bees are another insect to watch out for, especially if you're allergic. Snakes also commonly cause problems during the warmer months.
Summer can be a fun time, but it can also be dangerous if people don't take precautions. Just because it looks nice outdoors doesn't mean there aren't harmful things afoot -- or in the air. Think about your safety all year-round if you want to remain healthy, including during the beautiful summer months.
