Why Your Child Needs a Happy Space
By Brandi Goodman
Don't worry about creating a child's bedroom that's neat and proper. Kids make messes whether you want them to or not. They should also be able to create a room that's all their own. It will become their happy space that includes things they enjoy and helps keep them calm. You most likely want that for yourself, so why shouldn't they have that as well?
Privacy
Kids need their own privacy at times just as anyone does. When they want to get away and have some time to themselves, it's nice for them to be able to go into their room and relax. Learning to spend time alone and be independent is necessary for every child. A happy space they feel comfortable in is best.
Stress Relief
A happy space doesn't need to be the entire bedroom. Your child may opt to have a desk where they can sit and draw or a chair by the window where they can read. These are the happy spaces your kids need for stress relief. They can do something they enjoy and channel their energy into something creative so they can de-stress and stay calm.
A Sense of Self
As children age, they are just starting to get a sense of what they like and what they don't. It can take some time to figure out who they are, and who that is can even change from time to time. Kids can develop a sense of self when they have the creative space to do just that. Let your kids design their happy space with things they like so it showcases who they are and their interests.
Improved Mental Health
Sometimes, you just feel low. Even when nothing seems wrong, moods can drop and you can experience a melancholy feeling. Kids are no different. When they find themselves in a poor headspace, time in their happy space doing something they enjoy can work to improve their mental health. It can boost their mood and lift their spirits. It's good to include other happy things in this space, such as family photos, inspirational quotes, or a drawing they're proud of.
Every child should have a happy space, whether it's their entire bedroom or just a small location within the home that's all theirs. Men have their man caves. Women are creating she-sheds. Kids need a place like this as well to unwind, get some privacy, and enhance their mental well-being. If your child doesn't have a space like this for themselves, try to find a location where they can create one. It can help more than you realize.
