Tips to Recover From Surgery Quickly

By Randi Morse

One of the more frustrating things about having surgery is the amount of time that it prevents you from getting back to your regular routine. People often wonder what they can do to recover from their surgery faster. It turns out, there are a couple of things that will help to get you back to your daily routine quicker.

Follow Directions

You would think that people would be happy to do exactly what their doctors asked them to do after surgery. Before patients are discharged from the hospital, they are given a list of instructions. These instructions are given to you for a reason, but far too often patients disregard the instructions thinking that they don't apply to them or they're overly cautiousFollowing these instructions not only helps you to recover faster, it also helps you to stay health. For example, you may be asked to not have any baths after your procedure. This is often because sitting in bath water increases your risk of getting an infection. If you are told not to lift anything heavier than 10 pounds for a time, there's likely a reason for that as well. So make sure you follow your after-care instructions if you want to heal quickly and thoroughly.

Be Healthy Before

One of the best ways to recover fast is to make sure that you're healthy before your procedure. If your body is not working at optimal health before you undergo surgery, it will have to work doubly hard to heal afterwards. Make sure you're eating well, drinking enough fluids and getting enough sleep to better your chances for a swift recovery.

Pain Control

It's scary to think about using pain control medications in today's world, but sometimes they are necessary. Your doctor will prescribe you the medication that they think you need. Keeping your pain at a tolerable level is not only to help you stay comfortable, it's to help your body heal as well. If you're in too much pain to walk, you increase the chances of having blood clots. If you can't breathe well, or cough, you raise the risk of pneumonia.

Know When to Call

Finally, make sure you know when to call for help. People sometimes avoid calling for help after a surgical procedure because they feel they are overreacting. Your doctor would much rather have you contact them overreacting than have you not contact them and have the problems increase.

Recovering from surgery takes time and patience and a willingness to follow the instructions that you're given. As long as you do what your doctor says, and take your medication when requested, you should recover fairly quickly.
