Searching for the Fountain of Youth, Try This Instead
By Stephen R. Farris
Looking for the mythical fountain of youth is something everyone seems to look for at some point in time. Does it exist? Many cultures have claimed they had a fountain of youth and those claims have been around for thousands of years. However, there really is no such thing as a fountain of youth, nor a miracle drug that will keep us forever young, vibrant and strong.
The good news is, there are several things we can do to prolong our lives and maintain our health and strength. One of the secrets to living longer is by eating right, exercising regularly and maintaining a healthy weight.
There are things we should avoid, or cut out of our regular routine if we want to add years to our lives. Some of those include, smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, and eating all that junk food that seems to take up a good portion of our diet sometimes.
Diet
Starting a healthy nutritious diet plan is a great way to start adding a few extra years to life. Make sure to include plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains and lean cuts of meat such as chicken, fish and turkey. Avoid highly processed foods as they may contain hidden sugars and sodium. Always check your food labels before purchasing to make sure the right nutrients you need are in them.
Exercise Regularly
If you haven't been, then it's time to start exercising on a regular basis. At least 15 to 30 minutes each day is a good start whether it's walking, riding a bike or some form of aerobic exercise. Who knows, you might really get into it and add more rigorous exercises to your routine. You can buddy up as well so that you have someone to help keep you motivated.
Weight Maintenance
Eating a well-balanced, nutritious diet combined with regular exercise shouldn't be much of a problem in maintaining a healthy weight for your body. Studies show that obesity can lead to major health problems such as heart disease, hypertension and undue pressure on our joints and back. Following a healthy, nutritious diet plan with regular exercise can help you lose weight as well.
So in reality, that magic pill we are looking for actually begins with us and the health choices we make.
