Can Walking Cause Back Problems?

By Randi Morse

How often do you think about how you walk? Most people don't think about their gait unless something happens that makes it more difficult for them to walk correctly. Think of your body like a machine. It's designed to work together perfectly, and when one cog is thrown out of place, the machine doesn't work properly and throws everything else out of whack. This is what happens if you walk incorrectly. If, for example, you have a sore ankle and you limp for a while to help alleviate the pain from the ankle, you can cause serious issues with your back.

Back Pain

If you've been walking incorrectly, limping or favoring one foot over another, your spine is the part of your body that's going to suffer. This is because the spine, while being a tough part of your body, is also a delicate instrument. When you walk incorrectly your muscles compensate and pull your spine out of alignment. The body is forced to use ligaments, tendons, and muscles in a way that it is not designed to do, which throws everything else off.

High Heels

High heels are a common cause of back pain. Admittedly, high heels look great, and they make a woman's figure look amazing as well. The problem is that they force your body to work in a way that it's not designed to. Most people don't want to give up their high heels or favorite shoes. The good news is that you might not have to.

How Chiropractors Help

Chiropractors can be a great help when it comes to back pain that has been caused by foot problems. A chiropractor will be able to look at your back to see if you are dealing with any joint restrictions. Once they have worked to fix the restrictions, they may then ask to see you walk so that they can determine what it is about your gait that is causing problems with your back. They can measure the weight distribution in order to figure out if you are putting more weight on one side or another without realizing it. They can also help you to learn how to walk so that your back isn't affected, or can point you toward the right orthotics, if you have that much of a gait issue.

At The Joint Chiropractic you'll find chiropractors who are experienced in dealing with the side effects that can occur due to foot problems. With affordable rates and open office hours, it makes sense to pay a visit to The Joint Chiropractic if you have been dealing with unexplained recurring back pain.
