It's OK to Play Hooky Once in a While

By Paul Rothbart

Americans, in general, are working longer hours than ever. Although it's admirable that people are willing to put in the effort to get ahead, taking time off is essential to mental and physical health. Many people eschew vacations and even work most weekends. This is an invitation to many health issues. Weekends and vacations exist for a reason and should be utilized. In fact, playing hooky once in a while is also a good idea.

It Boosts Your Focus

For many people, going to work every day becomes a grind. They end up going through the motions without any real purpose or goals. Taking a day off can help you to refocus. You come back to work fresh and ready to tackle your current project. Sometimes a new approach to a problem will pop into your head when it's not cluttered with daily tasks.

It Refreshes Your Brain

Your brain can become overworked just like your body. Working long hours day after day can affect your creativity and cognitive ability. Your brain becomes exhausted and doesn't function optimally. Giving it a day to just relax and not have to work through problems is refreshing. When you get back to work, you may find that you think much more clearly and ideas flow freely.

You Connect With Other Parts of Yourself

It's very common for people to identify themselves solely by their occupation. But you are far more than what you do for a living. Your familial relationships define you as do hobbies and other non-work activities. Taking a day off helps you reconnect with those other aspects of your personality. You remember who you are. Realizing that you are a multi-dimensional human being is healthy and can be helpful when you return to work.

You Stop Taking Work Home

For many, the workday doesn't end when they get home. They take work home or check emails and make calls. Your home should be your sanctuary, a place where you can relax and take a break from work. By taking the occasional day off, you can remind yourself of that and how important it is to leave work at the office. It can lower stress levels and improve your health.

You Return to Work More Productive

Taking a day off is like taking a nap. Your mind refreshes itself. When you go back to work, you may find yourself raring to go and more productive than you were before your day off. Any time you find yourself dragging and non-productive, consider some time off.

Making a living is essential to survival. Most people have to work and some even enjoy their jobs. Time off is essential to staying healthy as well as engaged and productive at work. Don't feel guilty about occasionally playing hooky. You'll be a more productive employee and a healthier human being.
