Should You Buy a FitBit?

By Randi Morse

I'm not someone who has a ton of gadgets. I tend to want products that can do more than one thing, so I guess you could say that I'm super picky. Fitbit devices are all the rage and it seems like everyone, even my technologically challenged mother, has one. So I wondered if I should invest in a Fitbit or not. Is it a good idea to buy a Fitbit or similar device?

Exercise

One of the big reasons people get Fitbits is to help keep track of their exercise. It's true that the fitness tracker can be extremely helpful; it can track your habits and can help you understand where you're doing good and where you can improve. But it's important to realize that Fitbits won't help give you the motivation to exercise. It may for a short bit of time, but once the newness wears off you may go back to your old routines. If you enjoy exercising and want to track your progress, a Fitbit is a great idea. If, however, you want a Fitbit to help motivate you to exercise, you might want to rethink your decision to buy one.

Wearing Jewelry

Are you someone who can easily and comfortably wear jewelry? I have a difficult time wearing watches, which is ultimately why I decided that a Fitbit wasn't a great option for me. If you have a hard time wearing watches, you may find yourself buying a Fitbit as a decoration for your dresser rather than your wrist.

Getting the Data

Are you someone who likes data? The Fitbit was originally designed to help track exercise and nutrition, but it can be tricky for people who don't enjoy data to utilize all the functions the Fitbit offers. If you like the idea of wearing something on your wrist that you can use to quickly access your cell messages, there are other smart watch options available on the market. If, however, you really want to track your exercise and nutrition progress, one of the more expensive Fitbits would be the answer as they can give you all the data you can handle, and more.

When it comes to buying gadgets I tend to be different than most of my friends and co-workers. I don't rush out to get the newest phone and I don't buy something just because it's "cool." If you feel that your life would benefit by owning a Fitbit, go for it! But if you don't need all the functions that brand offers, or you have a hard time wearing something on your wrist, you may want to save your money.
