The Importance of a Good Night's Sleep

By Ashley Chapman

Sleeping is an important part of your health regardless of age. While it is important to get enough sleep, there are factors that may be preventing you from getting adequate sleep. Read more to find out what may be the cause of your loss of sleep, the risk factors and what you can do to increase sleep.

Main Causes

A few factors influence your sleep. Some of these factors may include:

  • Obesity
  • Hypertension
  • Stress
  • Pain

According to the American Psychological Association, stress is the No. 1 cause of sleeping problems. Depending on what is causing stress, you can find the best way to lower it.

Risk Factors

Losing sleep is not just a matter of feeling tired. There are health factors that could be a result of not getting consistent sleep.

Not being able to concentrate for long periods is a risk factor of not sleeping enough. This may influence your work or family life. This could also have a huge impact on your ability to drive, which is dangerous.

Another risk factor is your inability to have a regular eating schedule, which may cause weight gain. Not sleeping consistently means you may choose to eat what is quick and easy, rather than nutritious.

Irritability or aggressiveness may result from lack of sleep. Responsibilities need to be done, but with your body unable to fully function at its normal performance, may cause you to be irritated with friends or family.

Procrastination may be the cause of not getting enough sleep. Setting goals to finish work on time, may help with being able to set a regular sleep schedule.

If you rely on caffeine to get you through your day, it is important to limit the amount you drink. This also includes the time of day that you drink your last cup of coffee or tea. If you drink caffeinated drinks too close to your bedtime, this may be the cause of your sleeping problems.

Alcohol and big meals before bed can also influence your ability to sleep regularly and well. Limiting the amount of alcoholic drinks you have before bed is important. Also, try to limit your big meals to a few hours before you plan to go to sleep.

Overall Health

Sleep is just one factor of your health. It is vital that you pay attention to your body and how you are feeling. While these are suggestions on ways that you can improve on your sleep, it is always best to visit your doctor if you have any questions regarding your health.
