Mothers Need Self-Care Too!
By Donna Stark
It's easy to acknowledge all of the important work that falls on the shoulders of our mothers, and many of us take the time to celebrate her on that special day in May, but really, don't you think she deserves more than just one day of the year? With everything that she is responsible for, it's up to her loved ones to make sure that she is taking care of herself. That means she may need some time alone and it also means you may see your mom having fun (gasp!). But that's OK! Because deep down, I believe it's actually what many of us wish to see.
Self-care and self-investment throughout the years, our moms have encouraged us to abide by those words and now it is time for the tables to turn. Show your mom how supportive you can be by suggesting some of the following tips on how she can take better care of herself!
- Learn new things or hone those skills - Encourage your mom to learn more about a topic she is passionate about or to explore a new hobby. She can do this by taking a class, joining a group, listening to podcasts, or volunteering in the community.
- Let the creativity flow - Being creative certainly doesn't require a degree in fine arts! In fact, it doesn't even require a degree in crafting. Creativity can come from things such as knitting, cooking, gardening, photography, or playing an instrument. It can also come in the form of adult coloring books. The options are endless!
- Treat the body with care - Whether it is with physical health one day, and mental health the next, treating the body with care is critical to optimal wellness! So encourage your mom to find what works best for her. Maybe some time in the gym, maybe a day trip to a local winery, or maybe just some quiet time under a tree doing a crossword puzzle -- the key idea here is that she is able to stay fit, healthy, and relaxed while enjoying the activities that are important to her.
Supporting Your Mom
If you have a mom like mine, you know she always took care of herself last. So taking the time to prioritize herself first (for once) and nurture the things that are most important in her life is something that your mother should be doing every single day of the week. Whether she wants to nap in the afternoon or have coffee with friends, it's time to show your mom every bit of love and support that you can! After all, she deserves it!
