What Exactly Are Macronutrients?

By Donna Stark

If you are serious about your health and fitness, you may already know what macronutrients are, but if the only time you hear that word is when your friend on Facebook posts about it, you might want to keep reading. Macronutrients are the main nutrients in your diet that provide the energy to carry out the activities of daily life, but more importantly, they also play specific roles in maintaining optimal health. They are an important part of your diet because they help your body grow, develop, repair, and feel as good as it can! Sound interesting to you? Maybe even a little more interesting than your friend's Facebook posts? Well, check out the information below!

3 Types of Macronutrients

There are three types of macronutrients: carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. The trick to incorporating them into your diet is to understand the specific role each one plays in your overall health, and then tailor your diet accordingly. Take a look.

Fats

Nobody likes to talk about fats, but they are an essential part of a healthy diet and play many essential roles in the body. They are needed for brain development, optimal function of the nervous system, healthy skin, and the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins. They are also a rich source of energy!

Some examples of healthy fats are almonds, walnuts, seeds, olive oil, and avocados.

Protein

Well, you probably already know that protein is required for muscle growth, but it has many other functions as well. Protein is needed for the repair and regeneration of cells and tissue, a healthy immune system, and the production of hormones.

Good sources of protein are beans, seeds, lean poultry and seafood, and nut butters.

Carbohydrates

Carbohydrates are the body's main source of energy. They are divided into three types: sugar, starches, and fiber. But be careful! You need to choose these wisely when you add them to your diet, as some of them are better for you than others.

Apples, bananas, cauliflower, carrots, oats, brown rice, quinoa, and kidney beans are great options.

Good to Know

It is good to learn what macronutrients are and how they can impact your overall health and wellness so that you can make all the right choices when it comes to putting together a well-balanced diet! So give your body what it needs and start feeling your best! Who knows? You may even become inspired enough to write your own Facebook posts on the subject!
