Safe Travels for a Healthy Vacation
By Donna Stark
If it's been a while since you have taken a road trip with your family, you may have forgotten the toll it can take on your body. From pounding headaches to stiff, achy joints to debilitating back pain, the time you spend in your car can easily derail all the fun you have planned. It's important to take as many preventative steps as you can to reduce the risk of pain and keep your trip healthy, so here are some easy suggestions to follow from your local chiropractors at The Joint Chiropractic.
Travel Light
It's always good to be as prepared as you can with what you bring but that doesn't mean you should pack everything you own. Check the weather forecast for your destination before you start packing and try to stick to the basics. Also, try to avoid packing doubles of items (one pair of sneakers as opposed to a couple). This will help lighten your suitcase and make it easier and safer for you to lift into the car.
Be Comfortable
There is nothing worse than traveling for hours in your car while wearing clothes that aren't very comfortable. In addition to being very distracting, ill-fitted clothing and shoes can also be extremely unsafe and can lead to awkward sitting positions which may lead to poor posture and back pain. Be sure to think about how much driving you need to do and choose your outfit wisely before you leave your home.
Take Frequent Breaks
If you are driving long distances, do everyone a favor and stop for frequent breaks. Breaks will give you the opportunity to use the restroom, have a bite to eat, and stretch your tired body. Try to stop at least every two hours or so for optimal comfort.
Pack Healthy Snacks
Don't derail your healthy eating habits just because you are in the car. Skip those bags of chips and bottles of soda and pack healthier, nutrient-dense snacks. Water, raw vegetables, pretzels, fruit, and homemade sandwiches are much better than the snacks and beverages you will find at any roadside rest stop. On top of that, they will provide you with long-lasting energy!
A Safe and Healthy Road Trip
Do something different this year and arrive at your destination feeling great! By incorporating the suggestions above into your summer road trip, you can look forward to a pain-free vacation and plenty of fun and adventure!
