3 Reasons Why Your Focus is Suffering So Much

By Genevieve Cunningham

Sometimes focus is just hard to find. We all have those moments when paying attention feels like a lost cause. No matter how hard we try, we just can't do it. A lot of times when this happens, it's out of our control. Maybe we've been focused too long and need a break. Maybe we need to grab a snack that boosts our mind and energy. But other times, our lack of focus is completely our own fault. It's our own habits that get in the way -- and we just can't see it. If you've been having trouble with focus, take a look at these three reasons why it's suffering, plus some tips for changing your habits.

You're Staying Up Too Late

Staying up late is a habit. Even though some people are more designed for late nights (hey there, night owls!), staying up especially late is usually a choice. Unless you have serious insomnia, adjusting your bedtime and waking routines can make the world of a difference. But you have to change both! You'll have to wake up earlier, exercise at some point, and then go to bed on time for days and days in a row. Eventually, your body will adjust. Will it be hard? It might be. Will it be worth it? For your energy and focus, the answer is absolutely yes.

You're Constantly Connected

We live in a connected world. We're always just the touch of a button away from anyone at any time. And while this easy connection brings advantages, it also brings problems. The constant connectivity can cause a decline in mental health, energy loss, loss of focus, and irritable moods. If you're not disconnecting now and again, you should definitely start. Even if it's only for a few minutes per day -- late at night might be best -- it will make a huge difference in your overall health, focus, and productivity.

You're Spread Too Thin

Everyone is guilty of getting too busy from time to time. We work and have families and then try to participate with friends, in the community, and in personal endeavors. It's good to be involved. But when we spread ourselves too thin, we can't focus or think straight. We become scattered in thought and in action. We're not meant to be constantly on task! If you're always busy, it might be time to cut back on activities and make sure you have enough time for rest and relaxation.

It can be incredibly frustrating to lose your focus. Suddenly, everything in life suffers -- work, school, family life, hobbies. But if you're the cause of this lack of focus, there's definitely hope! Notice if these bad habits are a part of your life, make changes where necessary, and get your focus back on track in no time at all.
