Is Cardio a Chore? Here's How to Make It Easier
By Genevieve Cunningham
Some people absolutely love cardio. In fact, there's an entire group of people who don't really do anything other than cardio. They love the sweat and the breathlessness. They love the way cardio hurts both muscles and lungs. But then there's another group of people -- the cardio haters. There's no doubt that cardio can be difficult to like, but there's also no doubt that cardio is beneficial. So what happens when you hate it -- but you also need it? If you're among those who feel like cardio is a chore, take a look at these tips to make it easier (and more enjoyable!) in the future.
Join a Group
Sometimes things feel a bit less burdensome if we do them with others. Cardio definitely works this way for a lot of people. Maybe you hate the idea of a cardio class all alone -- but taking it with your friends? That's a little easier. Join a group of friends, relatives, or even strangers. It's the companionship and accountability that makes it easier. Find a group, make friends, and make cardio a good way to hang out and get fit all at once.
Experiment
A lot of people think they hate cardio, but they really just hate running. Luckily, running isn't the only kind of cardio there is. There are so many ways to get in a cardio workout. Be willing to experiment. Be willing to try various classes and workouts until something sticks. Maybe you don't hate cardio after all. Maybe you just need a little help finding something that suits your personality and lifestyle.
Reward Yourself
Some people are intrinsically motivated. They're going to work out no matter what because they know that they need to. Others need a little motivation from the outside. If this is you, don't be ashamed. Instead, embrace it! Reward yourself for working out. Buy the dress, the purse, or the movie tickets. Allow yourself one extra dessert this week. It's OK to reward yourself if that's what you need. Find what works so that cardio -- and better health overall! -- becomes a regular thing in your life.
Cardio can definitely be tough. It pushes us a little harder and taxes our muscles and lungs. It takes our breath away and makes us feel the burn. It's normal to dislike it! But we also need it. Use these tips to stifle your hate for cardio and to develop a love -- or at least toleration -- for this important part of your fitness success.
