Including Garlic in Your Diet May Mean Better Health

By Tom Herrin

In the constant search to develop a better and healthier diet, people try a lot of things.  Without a doubt, some foods are much better than others. It is not always foods, however, as some of the time it may be things other than actual foods.  Some herbs may be every bit as useful as foods when it comes to making a healthier diet. Garlic is one of those herbs that has quite a long history of successfully enhancing a diet to improve health in a variety of ways.  Many cultures seem to include a hearty portion in their diets. Some seem to have generations of success.

It May Lower LDL Levels

Even though it has no effect on HDL or triglycerides, garlic seems to have the ability to lower LDL, or bad cholesterol, levels.  It appears to reduce those levels by 10 to 15 percent. LDL is a major concern for a large number of individuals as they go to great lengths to try to control it.  People in many places around the world subscribe to its use for the purpose of improving cholesterol levels.

It May Prevent Neurological Issues

Diseases involving brain function are increasingly common today.  Dementia and other diseases that affect the brain may be seen in an increasingly aging population.  Many of these seem to be due to inflammation of the brain that results in an accumulation of proteins that may damage neurons.  Apparently regular supplies of garlic can help to increase the levels of antioxidants produced by the liver. This can help to reduce the inflammation.

It May Help Control Blood Pressure

Garlic contains polysulfides that seem to increase the flexibility of the blood vessels.  This can allow them to expand when needed so that there is less stress on the walls of the vessels.  According to one study in people who took blood pressure medication but had poor results, one gram of garlic per day was able to successfully bring blood pressure levels down.  For those who are afraid of the odor that sometimes is associated with garlic, there are odorless supplements available. With the fact that this herb is a simple thing added to food without being a medication, it may be worth consideration as a supplement to a healthy diet.  It has little cost but may bring about big results.
