Playing a Numbers Game May Make People Healthier

By Tom Herrin

A lot of people play the odds on plenty of things.  It may be that they take chances in general.  It may also be that they calculate just how often something may happen.  Many people today buy lottery tickets in hopes that they will strike it rich and never have to work again.  A better way to play with numbers may be to plunge into the game of dominoes.  The familiar tiles with dots on each side of a halfway line contain anywhere from a blank to six dots.  Everyone recognizes them, and kids always enjoy playing with them.  Playing the game can have a positive impact on health in several ways.

It May Improve Math Skills

Everyone knows that some things require practice and lots of it.  When people play dominoes, they must use math since adding those numbers of dots is a big part of the game.  As people use those skills, they will develop greater speed with their calculations.  Being able to look at the available moves and combinations and make quick decisions would certainly help to reinforce the basic skills people use in math.  It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out those benefits.

It May Boost the Immune System

Mood has a pretty big impact on the immune system.  It is common knowledge that when people are sad or depressed they are more likely to become ill.  It seems that they are more susceptible to disease.  The opposite is true as well.  When people are in good moods, they will often have more resistance to some illnesses.  Happy people seem to be healthier.  Playing dominoes appears to create positive feelings and trains brain function.

It May Strengthen Social Skills

Whether it is family, friends, or mixed groups in general, most of us can normally stand to improve our social skills.  The way we interact with others as we work, play, or do whatever, has a large bearing on what kind of success we have.  We need to be able to get along with others that we come in contact with.  Playing a simple game can provide an opportunity to relax and have conversation as we play.  The pressure is off after a busy day.  It is a great way to relax and learn to enjoy one another's company and serve as a stress reducer.  Almost everyone can benefit from that.
