Exercise and Sit at a Desk at the Same Time

By Tom Herrin

In many ways, this has become a sitting society.  It is not so much that people only want to sit, but that many jobs lend themselves to sitting.  When people operate computers or some other kind of electronic technology, they are generally required to sit in order to do their work.  No matter where anyone goes and does business, most business and record-keeping is done by some kind of device.  Sitting is not necessarily all that bad, but it is often difficult to get much exercise when they are so tied to a chair.  A good plan can help people to get some adequate exercise while they are sitting.

It May Work With Some Isometrics

Many people participate in yoga.  It is pretty effective and can be easily incorporated into exercises performed while sitting in a chair.  The namaste gesture is one that is very recognizable to most people.  It is done by sitting up with the feet flat on the floor and bringing the arms around with the palms touching in front of the chest.  Pressure is then applied so that the muscles contract.  Holding this pose for about 20 seconds can be sufficient to provide some work.

It May Build the Core With a Little Twist

Many people make an effort to develop their core.  It can often be a challenge and is not always easy.  While sitting in a chair, it is possible for someone to work those core muscles.  As someone sits in a chair and holds their feet slightly over the floor, they can do this by grabbing hold of their desk and using it to cause the chair to swivel side-to-side.  Counting each complete turn from left to right as one repetition, it is suggested that 10-15 times is sufficient.

It May Create Work With Crossed Legs

Most of us generally consider that sitting with our legs crossed is a way of relaxing.  This can be done while sitting in a desk chair and extending the legs.  Raising them as high as possible and pressing down with the top leg, they can hold for 20 to 30 seconds.  Switching legs and doing it again can work both legs equally.  We can get pretty creative with however we feel we need to work.  In only a few minutes of well-planned activity, we can get a reasonable amount of exercise that can maximize our time and efforts.
