Sugar May Not Always Be Bad

By Tom Herrin

Most of what we hear today about sugar is bad, or so it seems.  We all know some of the problems associated with it.  We live in a world in which marketing any kind of food or drink product involves appealing to the consumer.  As such, they need to taste good.  For lots of things, a sweet taste is what lures people back.  Many individuals take in far too many calories.  It is easy to let sugar get the best of you and eat or drink just one more thing.  When we take all of this into consideration, it is easy to come to the conclusion that sugar is bad for us.

Sugar Substitutes

The idea of using something in place of sugar to sweeten something is no new.  The primary reason for using something such as this is to provide something for those with diabetes.  As far back as the 1800s, artificial sweeteners were being developed.  The most notable was saccharin.  It was used for a long time, but was not nearly as good as some of the ones we have today.  I remember trying it at my grandmother's house, and it tasted pretty bad.  There has also been plenty of bad publicity.  It seems that there have been quite a few problems with these sweeteners and health concerns.

Using Sweeteners for Weight Loss

Artificial sweeteners were not actually developed for us to lose weight.  Their use for diabetics certainly tops that.  When we rely on sugar-free products for reducing calories, it is not all bad, but we may tend to feel that we can consume all we want with no consequences.  I have seen a lot of overweight people drinking diet drinks regularly.  There has also been some evidence that some of these diet drinks may actually cause us to eat more.  If this is indeed the case, it can defeat our purpose.

Restraint Is Best

If someone is diabetic, they are wise to use artificial sweeteners.  If they are trying to lose weight, a little more self-control may be a better solution.  Sugar in small doses is not so bad.  We have to learn to minimize our cravings.  The other thing about sugar is that it can be really bad for our teeth.  If we consume much of it, we need to be sure to clean our teeth as best we can afterwards.
