Don't Let the Cold Keep Your Kids Inactive

By Donna Kostiew

The cold, winter weather is hitting everywhere and the drop in temperatures can make it hard to keep your children moving and away from their technology. It is so important for their body and mind to stay physically active, but understandably, options can be limited during this time of year. So what is a parent to do to keep the sanity at home and to encourage good health for their children?

An Active Child is a Healthy Child

Young children should participate in physical activity every day to help build strong bones and muscles. But when the weather doesn’t work in your favor, you may have to get creative with how you are adding movement to your child’s day. Here are some tips to entice them off the couch or away from the computer screen.

  • Get active as a family at a local indoor sports facility
  • Ask them to help you shop for and carry in the groceries
  • Encourage them to play video games that require physical activity
  • Play some tunes and hold an indoor dance party
  • Join a community rec center
  • Head to the mall to get in some extra walking
  • Have fun with workout videos (put them on mute and have your kids pretend to be the trainer, use silly accents)
  • Take advantage of the warmer afternoons and bundle up for a short walk

There are numerous benefits to having an active lifestyle and it is essential to start these healthy habits while your child is young. Being physically active improves self-esteem, reduces the risk of childhood obesity, promotes a healthy heart, strengthens bones and muscles, and encourages good posture; essentially, it is a critical component to healthy growth and development; by establishing these habits early, the health of your child will be positively impacted for years to come.

So get into action! A great way to teach your children the importance of staying active is to set goals in your home each week to become less sedentary and to limit the hours of screen time for everyone, including yourself. Setting an example is the best way to encourage your family to get up and move, and as long as you are creative and incorporate some fun into this daily exercise, your children won’t even realize they are getting an actual workout.

It’s time to stop letting the cold, dreary weather dictate how you and your family approach the daily requirements of fitness. Make it a point to have a family meeting and brainstorm some ideas to get busy!
