Watching Your Diet While Working From Home
By Donna Stark
If you are still relatively new to working from home, you may have come across some unexpected obstacles to your days, but there isn't any speed bump bigger than not giving your body the nutrition it needs. And isn't that funny? Because when you found out you were going to be working from home, you became elated that you could finally start eating better, didn't you? Well, if that hasn't happened and if you find yourself munching on chips in the pantry while on your conference calls, keep reading! Here are some helpful strategies that can help you get back on to your original goals.
Move Your Workspace
Working from your dining room table? You may want to consider moving. Working near the kitchen can be tough on your diet because unlike an office, there is plenty of food just steps away and you may end up grazing more than you want. If there is no other space to work in though, keep the following tips in mind.
- Designate specific times to eat and stick to that schedule
- Hang reminders on your refrigerator and pantry door to stay out
- Treat your dining room table like an office ... not a snack bar
Prepare Your Lunches
Remember when you were at the office you only ate what you packed for yourself? Do that at home too. Plan what you are going to eat the night before or in the morning and set it aside in the refrigerator. In addition to being able to keep track of what you consume, this can also be a great time-saver for your day.
You control what is brought into your home so make sure you are buying healthy, nutrient-dense foods. Your pantry and refrigerator should not look like a vending machine. Make sure you have plenty of fruits, vegetables, proteins, and whole grains so you can give your body the absolute best fuel you can. Remember, what you eat will have a significant effect on your energy, productivity, and alertness, so choose wisely.
Keep Water by Your Side
Keep your snack cravings at bay, your energy up, and any brain fog away by drinking plenty of water throughout the day. Be sure to fill a water bottle and keep it by your side as opposed to drinking small cups throughout the day. That way, you will be staying out of the kitchen as much as possible and you definitely don't want to be hanging out where all the temptations are!
Achieving Your Goals
Staying on top of what you eat can be tough when working from home, but it's not an impossibility. By following the steps above, you can master both a career and a healthy diet with ease!
