The Link Between Pillows and Posture
By Donna Stark
Do you engage in pillow fights with your children every weekend? Do you punch your pillow when you want to get it all nice and fluffy? If so, you may want to stop, because the rougher you are with your pillows, the poorer your sleep may end up being! Did you know that pillows have an "expiration date" and that they should be switched out every six to eight months? Did you also know they should be washed frequently? It's true! Take a look at why good pillow care is necessary.
The Link Between Pillows and Posture
More than likely, when you think about your pillow, you think of the comfort it provides. Pillows are very good at propping your body up when you read your favorite book or catch up on your shows before bed, but they also do a lot more. By providing support and keeping your spine in the correct alignment, pillows help encourage proper posture and alleviate pain. Here are some of the ways a quality pillow can make life a little less painful for you.
- Cradles the neck and aligns the spine
- Helps strengthen proper posture during the night
- Relieves tension created in the back and neck during the day
- Provides support for the back
- Helps reduce the risk of snoring
- Promotes quality rest and sleep
- Boosts energy
How to Care for Your Pillow
Since you will be spending a huge portion of your life in bed and using your pillows, you need to make sure you are treating them with an abundance of tender, loving care. Here are some tips on how to do so.
- Fluff your pillows into their original shape every morning
- Protect your pillows with a pillowcase
- Wash the pillowcase at least every other week
- When the pillowcase is in the wash, place the actual pillow in the dryer to remove moisture
Because pillows are notorious for collecting dust mites, skin cells, and bodily fluids, it is important to choose ones that can be washed and dried easily.
