Should You Abandon Your Workout Routine?

By Sara Butler

People are on a constant search for the perfect workout. You know, something that you enjoy, that makes you feel excited to work out. Along the way, you're bound to find a dud here and there, but when do you know it's time to throw in the towel on your workout routine? Here are a few clues that that may help you decide if you should stick with your workout routine or try something new.

Enjoyment

Exercise isn't always rainbows and puppy dogs and excitement, but it shouldn't be something you dread either. At first you may not like a new workout but find that the more you do it, the more you enjoy it. Of course, that can go the other direction too, leaving you bored after only a few weeks.

Most workouts will be difficult at first, but after a time you should start to enjoy it. If you're bored, uninspired, or you simply hate it, then look for something else to do. You may have to kiss a few workout frogs before you find the right one for you, but it'll be worth it in the end.

Reaching Your Goals

If you're trying to decide whether or not your workout is working, then think back to when you first started it. Was there something you wanted to achieve or get out of it? If so, is it helping you to reach that goal? Perhaps you wanted to be able to run for 30 minutes without stopping or do a 2-minute plank -- is what you're doing helping you to reach your goals and make improvements week to week? If not, it may be time to find another workout that will help you meet your specific goals.

How's Recovery Going?

When you start a workout that challenges you, you must expect to feel sore or more tired than you normally would. That's totally normal! What isn't normal is for those feelings to hang around for a few weeks. If you're not starting each workout feeling refreshed, rested, and ready to go, then you may be doing too much too fast or too frequently. You may even have an injury lurking beneath the surface if you're not recovering as you should with rest days built into your workout schedule. If you're worried, then make sure to see your chiropractor at The Joint Chiropractic. If it's not an injury but you're still not feeling great, then it may be time to reassess what you're doing and how much you're working out so you can determine if you need to back off a bit for your overall health and recovery.

If you're having issues with your workout, talk to your chiropractor at The Joint Chiropractic.
