Fast Fixes for an Upset Stomach

By Stepy Kamei

Having an upset stomach is one of the most common health ailments we all deal with at some point or another. Stomach irritation can be brought on by a wide variety of conditions, from a poor diet to stress to dehydration and even more causes. It's good to know that, if your stomach sours suddenly, there are plenty of quick fixes you can rely on in order to start feeling better fast. Make sure to have the following items stocked up in your pantry at all times so you can turn to them in a time of need.

Ginger

Ginger is a spice that's been used medicinally for thousand of years, and for good reason, too. It's known to alleviate feelings of nausea and pain in the stomach, partly due to its natural anti-inflammatory capabilities. Ginger can be found in many forms, which helps greatly when it comes to adding it into your diet. You can stock up on ginger tea to have whenever your stomach is acting up, or you can grate fresh ginger and boil it with honey for a soothing drink. Ginger ale is another helpful beverage you may want to keep on hand -- many people find the carbonation soothes the stomach as well.

Peppermint Tea

If the taste of ginger is a bit too strong for you, consider peppermint instead. Peppermint is known to calm the spasms in the stomach which often lead to cramps, nausea, and even vomiting. Keeping a small amount of peppermint candies to suck on in times of distress can work as a quick form of relief as well. Some people find that just smelling peppermint essential oil can relieve their stomachs.

Bland Foods

It may seem counterintuitive, but sometimes, your stomach is acting up because it needs more food. Try to consume some bland foods within the category of the BRAT diet, which consists of bananas, rice, applesauce, and toast. These very plain foods can help settle the stomach while providing your body with the sustenance it needs.

Water

Finally, make sure you're staying hydrated at all times. If you find you're unable to keep water down for a significant period of time, you should see a doctor right away to prevent severe dehydration from affecting you.
