Have you ever thought about how people manage to live beyond 100 years of age? With heart disease, cancer, diabetes, bone disease, and other terrible diseases claiming lot of lives, it may seem out of reach. Despite this, many people still survive beyond their 90s throughout the world. What is the reason for this longevity? And how can one put these secrets into practice in one's own life?
Many experts pondered these same things when they first started researching the Blue Zones. These Blue Zones are Nicoya, Costa Rica; Okinawa, Japan; Sardinia, Italy; Ikaria, Greece; Loma Linda, California. These are the five locations in the planet with the largest densities of people with 100 years of age or more.
Avoid Processed Food
Processed foods, particularly those with a lot of added sugar, are consumed in small amounts in the Blue Zone areas. These people eat natural sugar that can be found in fruits, cereals, and red wine. They consume far less added sugar than people do in the United States.
In fact, several Blue Zone experts recommend that you consume no more than 28 grams of sugar per day.
Avoid Drinking Soda
You may not find many of the healthiest people drinking soda. They avoid added sugar. Also, researchers on Blue Zones discovered that taking extra sugar from drinks such as soda was particularly hazardous due to the lack of nutritional content.
In fact, frequent soda use has been associated with a higher risk of getting cardiovascular disease, weight gain, increased hunger, type 2 diabetes, and lower life expectancy.
Stay Away From Fast Food
Fast food has become a major contributing factor to a variety of ailments in the United States. In fact, eating fast food on a daily basis has been shown to elevate blood pressure, increase cholesterol levels, contribute to obesity, depress mood, and may lead to heart disease.
You may not find most of the world's oldest people eating a lot of hamburgers. They live in the Blue Zones, consume plants largely, and only eat meat on special occasions. Also, they don't eat too much red meat. Many of the residents of Loma Linda, in particular, are Seventh-Day Adventists who do not consume any meat.
According to a study by researchers on Blue Zones, pesco-vegetarians and vegans were among the world's longest-living people.
Control Your Cravings for Sausage and Bacon
People who live long may eat very little meat, particularly red meat. In a similar manner, some cultures avoid processed meats such as bacon, deli meat, and sausage.
Americans consume a lot of processed meats, which, although tasty and simple to cook, are virtually always high in salt and other additives.
Processed meat was shown to have a stronger relation to cardiovascular disease than red meat.
