Why Are You Having Arm and Shoulder Pain?

By Sara Butler

The chiropractors at The Joint Chiropractic treat more than just back and neck pain. In fact, they’re concerned with your overall health and wellness right along with your spinal health, which means if you’re experiencing pain anywhere, then they want to know about it. Many people experience arm pain. If you’re one of them, then one of these issues may be the reason why.

Nerve Problems in the Neck

Your arm pain may not be the result of problems in your arm at all but in your neck. The nerves that supply your arm start in the neck, so if there’s a problem there, in your neck, then it can cause you to feel pain in the arm. The most common symptoms of a pinched nerve in the neck are:

  • Shooting pain down the arm
  • Numbness
  • Muscle weakness
  • Pain when moving the neck

Treatment depends on the nerve involved, but this problem usually starts as one of these symptoms in the upper arm, hand, forearm, or shoulder.

Injury of the Rotator Cuff

The group of muscles in your shoulder that helps to support your shoulder and move it is collectively referred to as the rotator cuff. If any of these muscles become injured, you can begin to experience pain when you move your shoulders. The pain can move down your arm and is often most noticeable when you lift your arms above your head.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

This occurs when problems with the median nerve, which is the nerve that runs through your wrist. It often becomes compressed due to injury from a repetitive activity such as typing for hours a day. There is often numbness and tingling in the hands and fingers associated with this issue.

Cubital Tunnel Syndrome

The ulnar nerve is also called the “funny bone.” It can be impacted by keeping your arm in a flexed, bent position for several hours a day, stretching the nerve and resulting in tingle and numbness that starts at the elbow and moves down to the fingers.

If you notice any of these problems, the chiropractors at The Joint may be able to help. They can look at your symptoms and try to find the root cause of your pain. So come in today to discuss your symptoms as well as possible treatment plans to help you find relief.
