Don't Do This if You Have a Cold

By Sara Butler

You've probably had your fair share of colds in your life. That's why you may be surprised to learn that when it comes to the common cold, the things you're doing may be all wrong. Here are a few things you should never do when you have a cold.

You Take Antibiotics

Antibiotics won't do you any good with a cold because they're only for bacterial infections. The common cold is caused by a virus that simply has to run its course through your body. Plus, antibiotics can have some unsavory side effects that will make you feel even worse such as digestive upset and even a possible allergic reaction.

When you have a cold, rest and plenty of fluids is all you need to let your body do its work and put you on the road to recovery. However, if you ever feel as if you're not getting better as fast as you should, it's always worth a visit to a trusted healthcare professional.

You Stop Eating

It's not a good idea to overeat when you have a cold just as it's not a good idea to undereat. You may not feel like eating a lot since you probably have some symptoms that make eating a challenge, such as a stuffy nose. But it's important to realize that your body needs nutrients in order to get better. Chicken noodle soup is a solid option in times like this since it has good-for-you ingredients that can help you get better and support a healthy immune system.

You Don't Drink Water

Hydration is vital to help your body recover from a viral infection. If you don't drink enough water, then your body cannot heal as it was made too. In fact, it may hinder your body's ability to fight infection and make you feel sicker for longer. Always make sure you're drinking plenty of fluids when you're feeling under the weather.

You Drink Too Much Caffeine

If you're a lover of coffee, it may be difficult to cut back when you're sick. But caffeine can dehydrate you because it acts as a diuretic. That will only serve to make recovery more difficult. If you can't forgo caffeine completely, then try to cut back and balance it out with plenty of water.

Colds may be common but that doesn't mean you should treat it different than any other sickness. Allow yourself time to rest and recover and you'll be back on the healthy saddle in no time.
