Packing Your Lunch Has Advantages

By Paul Rothbart

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day and dinner is generally the biggest. They are usually consumed at home. But lunch, the midday pick-me-up meal, is also important. You wouldn't be very productive at work in the afternoon if you skipped lunch. Many people enjoy eating at a restaurant. It gets you out of your work environment and is convenient. No preparation and no cleanup. But there are advantages to making lunch at home and packing it to take with you.

You Can Have Exactly What You Want

Although there are many excellent restaurants, you are limited to those that are near enough to your work to allow you to eat and get back on time. You also have to choose food that can be prepared and served quickly. If you have dietary restrictions, it can be difficult to find places that have vegan, gluten-free or kosher dishes. By making your lunch at home, you can choose exactly the ingredients you want. You can count the calories and get the nutrients that you need most. A tailor-made lunch each day will help you stay healthy.

It Costs Less

Unless you are happy ordering off the dollar menu at a fast-food place, eating out can be expensive. Not only do you have to pay for the food, but you have to factor in the tip and the gas you use getting to and from lunch. Even having food delivered can be costly. By making your own lunch, you can buy foods that you enjoy in bulk, which is much more cost-effective. Over the course of a year, your savings can be significant.

It Saves You Time

It does take some time to make and pack your lunch at home. But it can eventually become part of your nightly or morning routine. When lunch break comes at work, your meal is ready to go. The time it takes to get to your car, travel to a restaurant, get a table, order, and eat will probably be far more than the time it takes to prepare your lunch. Ordering out still requires viewing a menu, making a call, and waiting for a delivery. You could finish your lunch in that amount of time. You may be able to use that extra time to get a little exercise or do some reading.

Lunch is an underrated meal. It's the nourishment that gets you through the second half of your day. Take advantage of packing a lunch. You may end up healthier, happier, and a little bit richer.
