What to Expect at First Chiropractic Visit

By Randi Morse

Fear of the unknown is a very common thing. It's the reason many of us are scared of things that we have no history or knowledge of dealing with. Some people are terrified of a chiropractic adjustment, they are concerned that it will be painful or that it will do irreparable damage to their joints.

Adjustments Don't Hurt

One of the biggest reasons why people avoid going to seek chiropractic help is because they are very worried that a chiropractic adjustment is going to hurt. It's important to know that while there are times when an adjustment may feel a bit uncomfortable, generally due to an increased amount of inflammation or tension in the area that the chiropractor is working on, most chiropractic adjustments are painless. Have you ever cracked any of your own joints? For example, have you cracked your knuckles or had someone crack your back for you? Just as a note, it is not recommended to have an untrained professional crack your back. I ask this because if you've ever had anyone crack your back then you have some idea as to what it will feel like when your chiropractor does a full adjustment. Your chiropractor is going to focus on relieving any tension and repairing any joint restrictions by using gentle manipulation. So again, while it may feel a bit uncomfortable, especially if you are not used to having someone manipulate your body, most chiropractic patients find out the experience is painless and that it offers a great deal of respite once the adjustment is done.

You Will Hear Noises

If you have a chiropractor professionally adjust your spine, it is likely you will hear noises, especially if they are working on your neck area. Have you ever heard your own voice from a recording? Have you been surprised at how you sounded? This is because we sound differently in our heads than we do if we are getting auditory feedback from a recording device. The same is true for those pops or noises you may hear when you are getting an adjustment. Because the adjustment is happening inside of your body, it may sound much more magnified than it would to someone observing the procedure.

At The Joint Chiropractic you'll not only find open office hours and affordable rates, you'll find chiropractors who understand that seeing a chiropractor for the first time can be a little scary. They'll work with you to make the experience as comfortable as possible.
