4 Tips for Healthy Traveling

By Genevieve Cunningham

Traveling can be a lot of fun. Whether it’s a vacation, a holiday, or just a little day trip to somewhere new, traveling allows you to see new places and gain new experiences. The hard part about traveling, besides the money, is staying healthy while doing it. It can be tempting to make the process as easy as possible, which sometimes means grabbing fast food or driving nonstop as fast as possible until you get there. This is not always a good idea. If you want to remain healthy and keep your fitness routine on point, you have to make time to stay healthy even while traveling. To help you get started, here are four simple tips for maintaining your health while on the road.

Prepare Food Ahead of Time

It might be boring or take a little bit of extra work, but having healthy food at your disposal is critical to health while traveling. Especially on long road trips, snacking is common. Sitting in the car for hours can be boring, and so we reach for a snack or nibble on something small. If you’re not prepared, this will turn into grabbing fast food or convenience food, and you’ll be taking in way more calories than originally intended. Pack some light healthy snacks such as nuts, fresh veggies, or fruit. You can even pack a cooler full of healthy foods for breakfast and lunch options. This one step may help you keep your caloric intake on track when you are doing little movement otherwise.

Take Breaks for Exercise

You don’t have to stop and run a mile. Don’t worry about doing jumping jacks on the side of the road or finding a gym to hit on the way. It can be a lot more simple than that. Just make sure to factor in a little time to get up and move around. It could be as simple as a stop at a rest area or gas station. When you do make a stop, don’t just sit in the car. Get up! Your body will thank you for the movement and stretching, and you’ll even get to burn just a few calories in the process.

Pack Water

Traveling is a time when we stop and grab a soda pop from the local convenience store and keep going. If you want to stay healthy, you have to pack water instead. Yes, the caffeine helps you stay awake, but you can find a similar option as an additive to your much healthier water. Really, an any soda is bad for your health. It’s too many calories and sugar without any healthy benefits. Just pack lots of water, and say no to the quick drink on the way.

Get Comfy

You will definitely like this tip for staying healthy. Road trips can be bad for your back and neck. Being in the same position for hours on end can give you a backache or neck ache that sticks around for a while. To prevent this, get comfortable. Adjust your seat, wear comfortable clothes, and even buy a neck and back support. At the and of your trip, your body will have fewer of those aches and pains if you take care of it on the way.

It is completely possible to enjoy traveling without saying goodbye to your health. Use these tips to help you make a plan. With some very simple steps, you can have a blast and protect your well-being all at the same time.
