Overcome an Afternoon Slump the Healthy Way
By Alexis Mills
We have all experienced an afternoon slump at some point in which, after a productive morning, the afternoon rolls around and staying awake, motivated, and productive seems impossible. Next time you start to feel a midday slump, try one of our healthy ways to feel more energized throughout the day.
Stay Hydrated
Instead of going with a coffee pick-me-up, pick a beverage that will keep you hydrated and energized. Of course, drinking water throughout the day will help keep you hydrated. As far as an afternoon drink, choose lemon water, herbal teas, aloe vera juice, or fruit-infused water. Proper hydration makes it so your body is functioning properly; without proper hydration leaves you drained and less energetic. To ensure proper hydration throughout the day, start right when you wake up and continue throughout the day.
Grab a Healthy Mid-Afternoon Snack
An instinct to eat a snack when you are feeling sleepy will help you gain back some energy as long as you choose a healthy snack. Pick an all-natural snack such as fruits, nuts, vegetables with hummus, slices of cheese, or a boiled egg. These snacks give off a sustained release of energy and make sure the brain stays alert.
Take a Walk
When you are starting to feel your focus drift, taking a walk will increase the blood flow to the brain and the body. Walking will also get your heart rate up and make you more alert by getting a little mental refresh from being away from your desk.
Quick Workout and Stretch
If you have time for it, a quick light workout will get you re-energized. If you don't have time to do a quick workout, do a stretching session to avoid being stiff and give yourself a quick boost of energy. There are many stretches you can do at your desk that will help you keep your muscles from being stagnant for too long.
Turn Up the Music
Listening to your favorite pump-up music can be an easy way to get you more energized. Put on your headphones and jam out while getting your tasks done.
Switch Tasks
When you are having a hard time getting one task done, sometimes just switching it up can help you remain focused. This will keep you stimulated by tackling something new and keep your brain interested in what you are working on.
Instead of falling asleep at your desk, hopefully using some of the above tips will help re-energize you for the rest of your day. Incorporating new habits that are healthy for you will give you energy that will last and without a crash.
