Simple Ways to Sidestep Stress
By Sandy Schroeder
In a busy world, most of feel stressed some of the time, but when it just keeps happening you may need some ways to send stress on its way. Here are a few ways to cut through the tension.
Find something to laugh about - Call a favorite funny friend or watch a funny old movie that makes you laugh. Your body will relax as you let your worries go. Look for the funny side of life as you make your way through the day. Once you see the humor, everything else falls into place.
Take a moment for tea - Step away from your desk and brew a cup of tea. Now find your favorite comfy chair and spend a moment counting your blessings. While you are there, think of all of the things that you want to do with friends and family or the places you want to go. Good thoughts generate good feelings.
Let your mind roam - When stress just keeps coming, close the door and doodle a little, moving from one random thought to another. Keep a sketch pad handy to doodle whenever you feel tense. Post them in your family room and encourage your spouse and kids to share their doodles too.
Get out in the garden - Or trim the hedge. Clipping or digging as you enjoy the sun and the breeze helps to put everything into a better perspective. While you are out there you might plant some heathy veggies such as spinach, lettuce or green onions.
Get together with friends - Meet for coffee or lunch and just enjoy catching up. Friends make good listeners to help you relax and let go of your worries. Consider making it a Saturday morning tradition or a Friday night party.
Play with your pet - A loyal dog or an affectionate cat will help you relax and gather your thoughts. My cat has learned to fetch like a dog and loves to chase the cap tops on plastic bottles. Invent some new games with your pets.
Help someone - Look around your neighborhood or community and spend a little time reaching out to a lonely neighbor, helping at the animal shelter, or volunteering at the library. When I do this, I realize just how fortunate I am and my worries drop away.
These are just a few ways to lower stress. Think about the things that you value most and consider more ways to shift everything forward to be better.
