Avoiding Treadmills May Have Left You Out

By Tom Herrin

There are plenty of people who prefer to do everything themselves, including make their own exercise program.  This usually involves simply getting on the move.  Whether this is on a track, trail, or on the road, there is nothing quite like the feeling of being out there with nature.  It works much of the time, but when conditions outdoors become more challenging, motivation can begin to wane.  Who wants to get out in extreme heat or cold or in the rain?  When this happens, it may be time to think about other options for getting in that workout.  Using a treadmill is a good one for many.

Using a Treadmill Allows Greater Control

Given the opportunity, most people like being in control over their own personal situations.  With a treadmill, people are able to set the speed, time, and level of difficulty.  This helps with setting goals and working to achieve them.  An even bigger plus for many is the ability to manage the environmental conditions.  Maintaining a desirable temperature while staying dry can be important to most.  Many people also enjoy the opportunity to be able to watch television or some similar thing as they pass the time.  Especially for those who may have trouble staying focused, this can be a great help.

It Can Help Strengthen the Heart

Many people work in jobs in which they get very little exercise.  This may be followed up by spending long hours in a car.  The sum total of all of this can be major problems with things such as the heart.  It is a vital organ that needs to be worked in order to be strengthened.  Walking or running on a treadmill can keep it pumping and doing so more efficiently.  Many people use them following major health issues.  Why not head that off by using them on a regular basis?  They are pretty affordable and many are portable.

If It Feels Good, Do It

The best way to find out if a treadmill is for you is to try one out.  You may do so at many gyms or sporting goods stores.  Trying out a few may help you find one that you will most likely use.  I found one that was reasonably priced and use it quite often.  I still enjoy spending time outdoors, but when I can't, or it is late, I can get on the treadmill and get a decent workout in a few minutes.  For me, it is a real help.
