There Are Enough Choices in Breads for Healthy Meals
By Tom Herrin
For quite a bit of time, many people have shied away from eating bread with their meals. This may be for a variety of reasons. One is that, for a while, white bread was linked to an increase in the number of cases of colon cancer. Another big reason may have been that the sugars, as well as other carbs, in bread didn't do a good job of supporting good health in those who are diabetic. Much of this may no longer be a valid concern with the current selection of bread available. A trip through the bread aisle of the market, or local bakery, may provide some good options for any of us who enjoy having bread with a meal.
Oat Bread Is a Good One
We all know about some of the great benefits of oats. They are touted for their ability to lower cholesterol. This same fiber that helps with this problem can also help to keep us feeling fuller longer. Much of this is because of the fact that it is slower to digest. This bread is packed with vitamins and has more protein than many other types of bread. Even though many people simply don't care for the sound of oat bread, it has a pretty good flavor.
Whole Grain Bread May Be Great for Diabetics
There are a variety of breads on the market that are advertised as having whole grains of some type. They are certainly a much better choice than white bread. Some are 100 percent whole wheat and some are 100 percent grains that may be from any of several different kinds of grain. Some of the whole wheat has not had all of the nutrients restored after having them removed through processing. Those that are simply listed as whole grain may provide some better options in terms of nutrients.
Eat for a Purpose
When we plan a meal, it is best to have an objective in mind. This may be to satisfy hunger, but for most of us who are concerned about good health. By making the right choices in bread, we may be able to have healthy meals that support our goals of better health. We may also be able to have something that has a really good taste. With this, we all win and have meals that are more meaningful.
