Burning Calories Through Winter Fitness Fun

By Brandi Swieter

The holidays are a time when many people pack on the pounds. Too many people overeat at gatherings, enjoying the turkey, stuffing, pies, cookies, and other goodies adorning the table. While it’s fine to indulge in some of it, fitness needs to be part of the winter routine if people don’t want to experience too much weight gain from all the food they’re eating. There are plenty of ways to burn calories through winter fitness fun that can help combat the problem.

Sledding

Sledding is a favorite pastime for many children and adults alike. There’s nothing like climbing up a steep hill just to slide down fast on a sled. All that climbing, however, will quickly burn some calories and give the legs a good workout. Take the family sledding as often as possible throughout the winter to get in some family time while also burning calories and staying fit.

Ice Skating

Whether there’s a local rink available or a pond in the back yard that’s frozen over, an area of ice is ideal for skating. It takes a lot of work to get used to, so beginners should go slow and steady when attempting the activity for the first time. The legs will get in a good workout from ice skating as they have to maneuver their way over the ice while trying to maintain balance.

Skiing

Many people enjoy skiing. The activity can burn roughly 200 calories in just a half hour’s time, depending on the person’s body weight. Downhill skiing may be tricky, but once beginners get the hang of it, the recreational sport becomes easier to manage.

Snowboarding

Perhaps better suited for children and teens, snowboarding is a great winter activity that will burn all the calories from the holiday foods consumed. It takes a great deal of effort from all parts of the body to maneuver the board and stay upright while making the way down the snowy path. It really works out the legs and core.

Plenty of winter activities exist that offer some fitness fun. Whether a person wants to snowboard, ski, ice skate, or sled, they’ll get in a great workout that will burn plenty of calories. Overeating is a problem around the winter months when the holidays commence. Staying active with one or more of these activities will help tremendously, and it can be made into a family occasion.
