4 Summer Activities That Promote Fitness

By Brandi Swieter

Summer makes the perfect time for fitness because many people already plan on doing things outdoors that count as exercise. Swimming, hiking, biking, and more are just a few of the typical activities people do throughout the summer months. Many don’t even see it as exercise but simply as something fun to do to stay entertained in the warm weather. Try these six activities and more for improved fitness each summer.

Swimming

The hot weather makes swimming the most ideal fitness activity for summertime. Most people want to get in the water simply to cool off without really realizing how much exercise they’re receiving. It’s possible to burn a lot of calories while swimming as long as at least 30 minutes is spent doing the activity.

Hiking

Going for a hike is a great way to get outside and enjoy the scenery when the weather is nice. Bring a water bottle because the activity is sure to be a scorcher. Find some local trails that won’t take too long or bring you too far out into the wilderness for the safest option. Heat exhaustion is possible if people are over exerting themselves or failing to drink the water they need.

Rollerblading

Not as many seem to do this activity as they previously did, but rollerblading or skating are still options for summertime fitness fun. It gives the legs a good workout and will leave people feeling sore the next day if they bladed or skated long enough. Buy a new pair of skates each year to ensure a proper fit.

Water Aerobics

Swimming isn’t the only option. Many water parks offer water aerobics outdoors that get people moving. Water is great to work out in due to the built-in resistance it creates. It also is great for people who struggle with joint pain or problems because it has low impact. Join a water aerobics class for a fun class that will keep your summer body in check.

Fitness is important to consider any time of year, but summer makes it easier to do so.
