Health Benefits of Apple Picking

By Brandi Swieter

Apples are ripe for the picking in the fall, causing many families to head out and make a day of it. Orchards and farms offer apple picking as a fun activity, giving people the chance to pick their own fruits to take home to enjoy. While eating the apples is healthy in itself, the act of apple picking brings some health benefits to the table as well.

Boosts Mood

People tend to feel down and depressed when fall arrives and the cold weather hits. Some start staying indoors more often, thinking there isn’t much to do outside anyways. Going outside and picking apples is a great way to boost mood. Those who spend a few hours outside strolling through the rows of apple trees and finding the best ones to take are likely to experience feelings of happiness and joy.

Offers an Opportunity for Socialization

Those who stay to themselves often can get some socializing time in by picking apple. This is another way to boost mood and improve happiness. Those who choose to go with a family member or friend can spend hours talking as they walk through the trees and pick their favorite pieces of fruit. It makes a great first date. Even individuals who go alone get to socialize with others as they get their ticket at the gate, make their purchases, and perhaps make some small talk with passersby.

Provides Physical Activity

Staying active is an important part of being healthy. Apple picking gets people off their couches and onto their feet. Spending even a half hour walking through the trees and reaching to pick apples can burn some calories and provide people with their physical activity for the day. Spend even more time at the orchard and you’re getting in a viable workout.

Being Outdoors Boosts Energy

Apple picking takes place outdoors. Time spent outside is an easy way to boost energy. People tend to feel more revitalized and happy when they take a walk outside. Instead of walking at a nearby park you’ve been to numerous times, try picking apples at a new orchard you’ve never been to instead. It will revitalize the soul and spirit.

Spend the day, or at least a few hours, picking apples and see how much better you feel at the end of it. The activity is sure to boost mood and increase happiness while simultaneously offering a chance for exercise and fresh air. Go apple picking this fall and reap the benefits.
