Starting College? Get Chiropractic!

By Brandi Goodman

College starts in August for many Indiana schools. Whether you'll be attending class full time or taking some online courses, you may experience some discomfort. Heavy backpacks, poor posture while sitting, and more, can play into the back and shoulder pain you can start to feel as the school year commences. If you're starting college, getting chiropractic care should be at the top of your priority list.

Dorm Life Brings Many Changes

Many college students opt for dorm room living. You'll be living right on campus and able to get to classes quickly. Moving into a new place already brings about many changes. Moving in with roommates, changing your schedule, adding in the stress of tests, etc., can be even more challenging. All of these changes can cause significant stress and feel overwhelming. This will lead to tension in your body and pain because of it. You may also find it difficult to sleep on a new mattress and in a new environment. Chiropractic can help with all of this. You'll get to have some tension reduced, pain diminished, and stress eliminated. Your sleep may also be improved.

Backpacks Weigh You Down

It's sometimes possible to simply carry a book or two to class. Other times, you'll need to have your backpack along so you can bring all of the necessary supplies you require. The wrong backpack can weigh heavy on your shoulders, pulling them down and causing discomfort. Make sure you find a bag that rests evenly between both shoulders and never place it over one alone.

Poor Posture Hurts Your Body

Whether you're in class sitting at a desk or at home at your own workstation, you're going to need to sit with proper posture. Slouching in your seat will quickly lead to back pain. Your computer should be kept at eye level so you don't have to look down consistently. This will cause an ache in your neck and shoulders as well. Use a lumbar support behind you or opt for an ergonomic chair if possible.

Sometimes pain can still set in even if we prepare in all the right ways. Stop in at The Joint Chiropractic for an adjustment so you can be best prepared for school to start this fall. Maintain their recommended schedule so you are always in the know regarding your body and whether it's operating to its full abilities. Your chiropractor may also have some additional recommendations on how best to handle a stressful school year.
