Why Your Workout Shouldn't Always Be the Same

By Genevieve Cunningham

Once we find a workout that we actually like, we often just stick with it. Why rock the boat, right? Most of the time, any workout is better than no workout. If you're moving every day, you're doing a good job. But if we're looking at what's going to do your body the most good, it's probably a better idea to change it up from time to time. Your exercise routine shouldn't necessarily always be the same. Of course, you're probably wondering: Does it actually matter? If you're hesitant to make any changes to your workout routine, take a look at why you should really consider changing it up.

Your Body Gets Used to It

If you read the same book every single night, you would start memorizing it. You'd know exactly what was coming next, and your mind would barely have to work. The same thing happens to your body. When you do the same exercise over and over again, your body remembers. Sometimes, that's a good thing. It means you have some muscle memory. But it also means that your body no longer has to work as hard to accomplish the task. Your body gets used to it, and soon, the results will slow down to a crawl.

Your Body Changes

Your body is constantly changing. Maybe you've lost some weight since you started working out. Maybe you have stronger muscles. Whatever the case may be, when your body changes, so do its needs. And when its needs change, you have to give it new tasks to meet those needs. If you're fine with your body staying as it is, awesome. But if you like seeing changes, you have to change with it as your body evolves.

You'll Get Bored

The biggest challenge in almost any workout is mental. If you can get your mind on board, you're way ahead of the game. Of course, getting your mind on board isn't easy. If you don't change your workout up sometimes, your mind will get bored. And coming back from boredom is especially difficult. Your mind will lose focus and motivation. To stave this off, keep the variety alive. The more exciting the workout, the more likely you are to stick with it, and the more success you're going to see long-term.

As long as you're moving regularly, you're on track to better health. But if you want to get even further ahead, change up your routine sometimes. The more variety, the better it is for your body and mind. Find a handful of workouts you like, put them on a rotation, and get moving toward a fit body and life today.
