How You Can Conquer Sleep-Related Anxiety

There are many reasons why people have trouble falling asleep. One of the more common things that interrupt sleep is sleep anxiety. You know the drill – you’ve got to get up early for a meeting but are having trouble falling asleep, so you start to have a little freakout about the sleep you’re unable to get. Been there, done that! In those cases, the classic sleep better routines of avoiding caffeine and blue light before bed aren’t really going to help. Here are a few things that just might.

Write Those Worries Out

The thing that keeps most people awake at night is their own thoughts. Sometimes they’re negative, sometimes they’re anxious, sometimes they’re rapid thoughts that can’t be turned off. Whatever they are, they can really keep you from falling asleep!

To combat these thoughts, try writing them down. Not on your phone or on your laptop but on a real piece of paper with a pen. Write down everything that’s bothering you and don’t hold back! It can help you to drain the thoughts from your head and help you fall asleep. If you want to take it one step further, write all of it down and then lock it in a box. It can help you literally put your worries away and get some sleep.

Get out of Bed

You don’t want to associate your bed with an inability to sleep, so if you discover you can’t get shut-eye like you want to, then get out of bed! If you can’t fall asleep within 20 minutes of shutting off the light and lying down, then you need to get out of bed and do something else, such as pick up a book and read or color in an adult coloring book. The key is to do something mindless that allows you to get your mind off what’s keeping awake. Hopefully, feeling tired will soon follow.

Flip It

During periods of particular difficulty falling asleep, you should turn your world upside down and try sleeping with your head where your feet usually go. A change in perspective may help you to get to sleep!

Sleep anxiety can be a vicious cycle! Break out of it with these tips and hopefully, you'll be on the road to a good night's rest in no time!
