Foods as Energizing as Coffee

By Sara Butler

Most people like to drink coffee because it helps to provide a little pick-me-up, but coffee isn’t the only choice when you feel your energy waning. In fact, there are many healthy foods that can help you get through your busy day feeling energized. Some of these foods contain caffeine, but many contain nutrients that help you feel more energetic, such as fiber and Vitamin B12. So, the next time you feel a little sluggish, consider munching down on one of these foods instead of reaching for a cup of coffee.

Start your morning off right with a bowl of oatmeal! This complex carbohydrate helps to give your body fuel it can burn through slow and steady, keeping you energized all morning. Oats also help to boost your body’s production of serotonin, which helps to enhance learning and memory as well as combat stress. Just stay away from flavored oatmeal that has a lot of added flavors and sugars. Stick with steel cut or rolled oats.

A nice cup of peppermint tea may be in order to keep you going today. You can also chew some peppermint gum if you need something to help you get going during your afternoon slump. Researchers have found that the scent of peppermint helps to reduce feelings of fatigue and increase alertness. So, when in doubt, go peppermint!

If you’re looking to add a little pep to your morning, then cinnamon may be what you’re looking for. Just smelling cinnamon can help you reduce feelings of fatigue, so add some to your morning oats for a double whammy of energy or add a dash to a cup of tea.

Water may be simple, but it provides your body with something essential that keeps it functioning optimally. When you’re feeling tired, think about how much water you’ve had to drink. Dehydration is one of the leading causes of feeling a lack of energy since your body doesn’t have what it needs to carry out its normal functions. If you feel the afternoon energy slump coming on, then reach for a glass of water as a way to feel more energized.

Feeling as if you’ve been zapped of all energy isn’t uncommon; neither is reaching for coffee to help you get through. But don’t forget that there are plenty of ways you can summon more energy without going back for that fifth cup of coffee!
