Get Fit: Cardio You Can Count On

By Genevieve Cunningham

When you’re ready to get fit and healthy, you want something that’s really going to work. You want something that is going to show results and show them fast in order to keep you motivated. And while there are many exercises that can do just that, how are you supposed to know where to start? If you’re looking for some basic cardio to get your body sweating and those calories burning, take a look at these three great options to try today.

Jump Rope

You probably don’t remember just how hard jumping rope really is. It’s really, really tough. Not only will it make your legs burn, but you’ll also feel the burn in your lungs, and you’ll be absolutely dripping with sweat. This exercise burns massive calories, so you can also rest assured that you’re getting in a good workout. Set a timer, grab a rope, and do your best. This exercise definitely won’t disappoint.

Running

You really can’t go wrong with the classic exercise of running. Running works every muscle in the body, from the arms to the legs and even the core. The good thing about running is that you don’t need many supplies. Just a good pair of running shoes, and you’re good to go. When you feel the need to get in a good, solid workout, throw your shoes on and hit the pavement. Though it’ll be tiring and tough, you won’t be sorry you did it when it’s over.

High Intensity Circuits

These were really hot in the fitness world just a few years ago, and even though the popularity has waned a little, they’re still valuable. High intensity circuits require you to do a certain exercises -- jumping jacks, burpees, squats, etc. -- for a certain time limit. When time is up, you take a very short rest and then move on to the next circuit. Because of the constant change and movement, this will help you break a sweat and burn some serious calories. Give it a try if you need a workout that isn’t boring or repetitive.

Working out, and especially cardio, can be fun. You can choose the low-impact route and go for some walks. You can choose to try something brand new and pop into a SoulCycle class. Or you can go for the tried and true exercises that are sure to work. If the last option sounds good, these three ideas are the best place to start. Give them a try and get the body of your dreams before you know it.
