3 Ways to Limit Holiday Stress
By Genevieve Cunningham
It seems like the holidays come earlier every year. Though the dates of the holidays don't actually change, we seem to get more stressed with every year that passes. We worry about travel plans. We worry about presents. We worry about the cleanliness and appearance of our homes for relatives. There are just so many things to worry about. Unfortunately all of this stress can lead to a decline in overall health and well-being. If you would like to protect your health, both mental and physical, take a look at these tips to limit your holiday stress starting right now.
Get in Touch With the Reason
It doesn't even matter what your personal beliefs are, we can all agree that the holidays are not about buying the biggest nicest presents or having the most expensive house. The holidays are about kindness, service, giving, and spending time with friends and family. If you are starting to feel the stress, get in touch with the real reason for the holidays. Focus on the love and compassion of the holidays rather than the consumerism. The earlier you can get in touch with and capture this feeling, the easier it will be to keep the stress away.
Get Prepared in Advance
Even though the holidays are not about gifts, we still have to be prepared. If you want to limit stress, start preparations now, weeks in advance. Start buying and wrapping presents. Start planning menus. Start cleaning the house and making space for visitors. The less you leave for the last minute, the less stress you'll feel as the weeks turn into days and then minutes.
Ask for Help
Guess what you don't have to do it all? Ask for assistance from your spouse, kids, friends, and neighbors. Ask your church, community, or other organizations of which you are a part. The holidays are a time of giving, so let people give of their time, and then do the same for someone else. Getting some help allows you more time to focus on what matters, and clears your schedule for spending time with those you love.
The holidays are a ton of fun. We love the season, and most people make it through relatively unscathed. But the more stress you can avoid, the better you're going to feel overall. Use these tips to keep the holiday stress away, and enjoy the season more than ever this year.
