Feeling Miserable? These Tips Might Really Help!

By Genevieve Cunningham

It's no surprise that Lafayette has previously been named America's happiest city. It has a lot to offer its community members -- culture, a laid back style, and plenty of family-friendly fun. But even in the heart of the happiest city, it's possible to feel less than your best. To feel sad. To feel downright miserable. While moments of unhappiness are certainly normal, unhappiness that lasts for long periods of time can become problematic. Sometimes, you need outside help in the form of a doctor or therapist. But other times, you may just need a few lifestyle changes to really change your mood. If you're feeling down, take a look at these tips to really alter your mood and help you feel your best.

Find a Hobby

Hobbies keep us involved. Those with hobbies tend to be so much happier than those who don't have any at all. But here's the thing: You really need a hobby that doesn't involve a screen. Too much screen time is heavily linked to a decline in happiness. Try a hobby that keeps your hands busy -- knitting, model cars, painting, pottery. This can relieve stress, help you build a skill, and keep your mindset in a much more positive state.

Serve Someone Else

Happy people tend to be the most helpful. They give of their own time and energy in order to make someone else's life better. Do they do this all the time? Of course not! But they do it regularly. Volunteer your time for a cause you love. Visit with elderly in your community, join Habitat for Humanity, volunteer at your local animal shelter. You'll be surprised at how much better you feel when you serve someone else. Give this a try, and so many of those negative feelings will melt away.

Be in the Moment

It might sound like hippie advice, but it's advice that really works. Many healthcare professionals argue that the past and the future don't really exist. Why? Because the only moment you can possibly live in is right now. You should still plan for the future. You should still save money and make good decisions. But enjoy the moment you're in right now. Feel it, be here, and don't allow worry to take away what's happening now. This is really hard to do, but once you get the hang of it, it can completely transform your life for the better.

Feeling happy sometimes is normal. Feeling miserable sometimes is normal. Feeling angry, depressed, rundown -- all of these emotions are completely normal! But if your feelings of despair take up too much of your time, it's time to make some changes. Try adding these things to your life, and you may be able to improve the way that you feel right now and moving into the future.
