Is Herbal Tea a Secret Weapon in Weight Loss?

By Genevieve Cunningham

Herbal tea is an interesting drink. Why? Because chances are good that you either love it and drink it often, or you've never really given it a chance at all. Herbal tea comes in all different flavors and with all different health benefits. People tend to flock toward one kind or another because of the potential benefits it offers. But as it turns out, herbal tea in general may bring one big benefit that almost everyone can benefit from: weight loss. If you're interested in losing a little weight in an easy (and tasty!) way, take a look at how drinking herbal tea regularly may help.

It Has Very Few Calories

Herbal tea doesn't contain very many calories. In fact, most herbal teas start with zero calories. If you choose a sweetener that's also zero calorie, then you'll have a flavored drink without dipping into your caloric consumption at all. For anyone who counts calories to reach that goal weight, this is certainly a good thing. So why not just choose a diet soda with zero calories? Because you'll still be getting the acids and carbonation and caffeine that come with most soda choices. Choosing herbal tea offers the flavor without any of the negatives. Win-win for anyone interested in weight loss and better health.

It Fills You Up

Just like water, herbal tea can make you feel full. If you're trying to lose weight, this can mean that there's less room for food -- which lowers your total calorie consumption for the day. And along with helping you to avoid overeating, staying full has positive effects on your body and brain. It can make you feel more satisfied throughout the day, which in the long run can lead to an overall sense of wellness and happiness -- which means less binge and boredom eating! If you need something to fill your belly and keep you full, herbal tea is a good, flavorful, delicious alternative to water.

It's a Habit

A lot of people drink or eat certain things purely out of habit. Maybe you have coffee for its perky effects -- but also because you like the habit. Maybe you have a soda at lunch for the same reasons. Herbal tea can be a habit too, but since it's low calorie, it might be a much better habit to develop. Grab a warm cup of herbal tea in the morning, after lunch, and just before bed. The habit will be soothing, but it won't bring massive drawbacks. If you like habits -- little things that bring comfort throughout the day -- drinking herbal tea may be a good choice.

Herbal tea might help you drop some pounds and calm your nerves. It might be a great new habit to add to your life. And as it turns out, it might accelerate your weight loss and keep you moving toward better health. Give a few flavors a try, and allow a little herbal tea to improve your health as you move forward.
