How to Borrow and Benefit from a Plant-Based Diet

By Stepy Kamei

There are many different types of diets out there, but how do you know which one you should be focusing on? Some diets are mapped out to target a specific health concern, such as reducing sugar consumption for those with diabetes or cutting out shellfish due to an allergy. Still, even if you don't have a specific health concern to worry about, a plant-based diet can be highly beneficial to your overall health and wellness. If you're not ready to fully commit to a whole new dietary plan, you can just borrow the key elements from the plant-based diet and still receive its benefits. No matter what your circumstances are, it's a good idea to consider adding some plant-based dietary wisdom into your daily schedule.

What is the Plant-Based Diet?

The plant-based diet is exactly as it sounds -- a diet in which plant-based foods are the primary source of nutrients. Leafy green vegetables, fresh fruit, beans, and even fish are all staples of this type of diet. Contrary to popular belief, this is not the same thing as a vegan diet.

How Can it Benefit Your Health?

Foods within the plant-based diet are often rich in many important nutrients, vitamins, and minerals your body needs to thrive. These nutrients are often lacking in the modern diet.

The plant-based diet is also significant for what it doesn't include: added sugars, preservatives, and flavoring agents. Foods within this diet tend to be fresh and minimally processed (if processed at all), meaning they don't usually come packaged or frozen. Processed foods usually strip away many important nutrients, which is why it's best to stick to fresh plant-based ingredients in your meals and snacks.

What's more is that plant-based food consumption has been linked to a decrease in the development of such health issues as heart disease, obesity, and stroke.

How to Borrow From the Plant-Based Diet

If you're ready to see the benefits associated with this diet, but maybe not quite ready to fully commit to a new dietary plan, consider simply "borrowing" the most crucial aspects of a plant-based diet. Essentially, do what you can to minimize consumption of processed and packaged foods. Replace these with whole fresh produce. You can roast all kinds of vegetables to use as a base for your favorite dishes. Switch out red meat and get protein from healthier sources, such as fish, nuts, and beans. Finally, do your best to get rid of artificially sweetened drinks and desserts. You can replace desserts with fruit, and sugar with honey.
